Denver, Colorado Boudoir Photographer: Special Thanks for a Wonderful 2010

In April I somewhat randomly, and quickly, fell into boudoir photography. It was love at first sight. The minute I saw The Boudoir Diva's gorgeous images, I knew I HAD to do this. Boudoir photography encompasses everything I am and everything I love as a woman; hair, makeup, laughing, feeling beautiful, jewelry, an excuse to dress up, and the best gift you could ever give your husband etc. My immense love for boudoir is I think why I never doubted I could do it. "I'll just get a bunch of friends together and do it," I thought. And I did. 5 of my friends joined me in April for my first ever boudoir shoot and it could not have gone better. We had tons of fun and I proved to myself that I could, in fact, take a beautiful boudoir photo. That was all I needed!!

It happened so quickly and somewhat easily for me, but I know it could not have happened without the support of so many people. I want to thank you all, for what you've all contributed means SO much to me.

Mom & Dad- Thank you for the financial support, the constructive criticism, the room in your house, and everything else.

My husband- Always there to offer sound advice and support when I am up and when I am down.

My original 5 girls- THANK YOU for trusting me enough to do this for you all when I had never done it before. You will always remain so special to me for giving me the confidence to start this business.

Lindsay Schneider- Lindsay, I really can't thank you enough. Not only are you TRULY the most talented makeup artist ever, you are a constant sounding board, creative well, hilarious and giving soul and I am so thankful I found you on Google ;)

The Boudoir Divas- Every time you wrote me back, every time you mentioned me on your blog it upped my confidence and showed me I could do this. I admire you and hope to meet you in 2011! Thank you for what you have done for this profession!!

Ashley Maxwell- You may not shoot boudoir, but you gave me the confidence to find my niche and run with it. Thank you for always giving me advice and for letting me tag along with you and Jason in Sept. I wish we lived closer.

All of my beautiful models- Thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me photograph you even though you were nervous. Thank you for all of your kind e-mails and comments. Every time I hear that you or your husbands loved the photos, it make me SO happy.

Happiest of New Years to you all!! Now please take a moment to vote for your favorite photo of 2010! (DETAILS HERE)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Denver, Colorado Boudoir Photographer: Ms. Abby and Our Big TV Debut

When I was in 4th grade I decided I wanted to be an actress when I grew up. I was in tons of plays at the local community theater in Pennsylvania, and even won an award for my portrayal of Scout in To Kill A Mockingbird. I was a pretty shy kid, but when I got on stage, I just LOVED it.

As I got older though, my shyness and fear of failure (trying out for a part is scary!) stopped me from acting and I gave up my dream of being in the movies someday. I still am somewhat obsessed with Hollywood and know who everyone is and what their working on, but now that I'm older I also know the movies are not as glamorous as they seem. Long hours on set, waiting around doing nothing...doesn't sound like too much fun.

Still, when a former client and friend offered me the chance to be on Channel 7 news, I was pretty psyched. I put a lot of thought into my outfit, got the house and studio all spiffed up and I was excited/ nervous. As most of you probably know, they were featuring me and my team on their Veteran's Day program. We had given away a free shoot, including hair and makeup, to Abby whose fiance is overseas in Okinawa. Channel 7 wanted to film us getting Abby ready and photographing her and talk about us giving back to the military.

When our cameraman arrived, he immediately began filming. And he filmed for over 4 hours. By the end, we were all exhausted, and we hadn't even done the actual shoot yet! All of us were amazed to watch the 4 hours of shooting the same things over and over again from different angles narrowed down to about 60 seconds on the news. The world of television truly is an amazing thing! But the story came out great and it was a fun process.

So thank you to Channel 7 news, especially Dayle Cedars. Thank you to Jessica for setting it all up. Thank you to Abby and her best friend Brittany for being troopers and hanging out with us for 4 hours. And THANK YOU to my amazing team, Lindsay Schneider and Melina Ayala, neither of which ended up in the story, but who gave their time and skills to the shoot.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the day, as well as a link to the TV clip in case you missed it ;)

*I just want to point out that Melina and Lindsay both had to leave so they did not get to touch up Abby's makeup or hair throughout the day. So the beautiful makeup and hair you see here lasted over 4 hours...now THAT'S pretty amazing!

Denver, Colorado Boudoir Photographer: My Biggest Fan

I think it's safe to say that besides my family, Ms. L is my biggest fan. She's always commenting on my photos, referring her friends to me and FINALLY got to come in for her very own shoot.

She had a great attitude and even though she said she was nervous, we had a lot of fun. With her great set of outfits and shoes and makeup by Lindsay, she looked amazing. Thanks Ms. L for all of your support and a super fun shoot!

Here are a few of my favorites from her shoot!

This is one of our new sets...isn't it dreamy?!

Denver, Colorado Boudoir Photographer: The Influence of Burlesque

On Saturday some of my girlfriends and I went to see Burlesque. I have been amped up about this since I saw the preview back in September. I LOVE Christina Aguilera (most of the time anyway...the brunette dreads were a mistake). I think she is beautiful and her voice gives me goosebumps. Her appearance put together with a 64-year-old Cher sporting a super high cut leotard, a soundtrack to die for and a super hottie named Jack (Famous Amos anyone?) puts this movie in my top 5 favorites.

The best part of it for me as a boudoir photographer was the costume/ makeup aspect of it. AMAZING. The outfit made of pearls? HELLO! I've found some photos of my favorite looks from the movie below. It inspired me so much and I hope a lovely lady will come in soon and say "Burlesque me!" I know my makeup artist could do any of the following looks and the shoot would be stunning...c'mon ladies, what're you waiting for? SHOW ME HOW YOU BURLESQUE!!!

Love the tights! And I loved her short wig.

This is the pearl outfit...it was killer. Whoever made it should get an award.

This was a classy, beautiful look and a very lovely song too. I loved the lighting of this whole scene.

Insane false lashes. This was a great scene too.

Oh...oops...how did HE get in here? ;)

Denver, Colorado Boudoir Photographer: Why You Need Professional Makeup for Your Boudoir Shoot

This post has been a long time coming! My makeup artist, the fabulous Lindsay of www.makeupmadame.com, and I wanted to put something together to get across the importance of professional makeup for your boudoir shoot. So many women think they can put on a little extra Cover Girl or L'Oreal and they are ready to go. But while this may look great when you're going out, it is all wrong for being in front of the camera. This is why I've incorporated Lindsay's artistry into ALL of my packages. Her work combined with my work will leave you looking amazing!

When it comes to makeup, looking good in person and looking good in a photo are two very different things. When you come to my studio, you will be under some pretty intense lights. That's why Lindsay's expertise is so important. She follows a specific regimen to make sure you will look gorgeous ON CAMERA. Read her post below for more information, and see the before and after photo at the end for even more evidence (click to enlarge)!

Here's a recent post from her BLOG on some of the things she incorporates in your professional makeup session.
Professional makeup application is a service that many woman do not consider. These are the some of the reasons why:
1)Most woman have a daily "routine" doing their own makeup, that she feels will get her by.
2)Having a  friend/family friend that is decent at her own makeup and tries to attempt doing yours.
3)Other women are nervous to have a professional attempt their makeup because they have had a bad experience in the past
4)Or simply because they feel the artist will put way to much makeup on them, and they won't look like themselves.
Benefits:
A professional MUA understands all the elements that are involved with a makeup application, from the effects of  lighting and exposure of the camera, to the textures, tones and finishes of the makeup. A consultation is done before the actual makeup application, so you receive a customized look that accentuates all of your best features using your skin tone, face shape, and eye shape/color.  When having any professional photography done- wedding photography, photo-shoots etc., I highly recommend using a professional makeup artist
Professional Product:
Using professional products and brushes are so important in a makeup application. 95% of everyday street makeup like Cover girl, Maybelline, Revlon etc. is made for daily wear, it's not made for photography. The purpose of professional makeup is to enhance your best features and minimize your flaws while staying on all day.
When using eye shadows, foundations and blushes multiple questions should be asked. Where do I put a frost or a matte eye shadow? Where do I highlight and contour using foundation/blush/bronzer? A professional knows the theoretic reasoning behind these questions, leaving your application beautiful and blended, highlighted and contoured properly.
HD Makeup is the new "revolutionary product". The coverage is complete and flawless. It is made for the camera. There is a lot of theory to the whole HD concept, but simply it leaves a crisp and clear finish to the skin.
Brushes are very important to an application. Makeup brushes vary according to the purpose, design, material, quality and style. They apply the product smoothly and flawlessly while using minimal product. There are hundreds of brushes with multiple purposes, and a MUA will know the reasoning and use for each of them. In addition, maintenance and cleaning are practiced after each client.

Denver, Colorado Boudoir Photographer: A Dream Day for Ms. J

A few months ago I ran a contest asking why you ladies thought you deserved a free boudoir shoot. I got a lot of interesting entries. Although Ms. J wasn't the winner, she did come in for a shoot and has graciously allowed me to share her photos and unique story with you.

Ms. J recently emigrated from Columbia. She is intelligent, beautiful and has a great sense of humor! She is bilingual, published in several scientific publications and has a Master's degree. Yet, even with all of these accomplishments, she always dreamed of being a model. Even as a young girl, this was her desire, but in order to please her family, she opted for a career in science instead. She never let her dream die though and worked hard to keep herself prepared for when the day came that she would be able to get in front of the camera. So you can imagine our excitement on the day of her shoot!

Here's a little quote from Ms. J.

"When I look at my body, I still believe I can do it. Maybe this constant reminder that there is something in my bucket list that needs to be done has given me the strength to respect my body along those years. I know that the possibility of being a professional model at this point in my life is remote, and I easily could have let my body go. But I realize “this is the only body I have and it deserves my care!” I am not talking about fancy spa sessions and cosmetic surgery… I, like many other women, will never have the money to do that. I am talking about the basics… controlling what you eat, sleeping well, working out, and having inner peace. Many may think I am doing this for vanity. I call it living out my dreams. By doing this, I have managed to keep a body in a shape I want to see in a picture.  I think that amongst those titles and diplomas…that picture will show who I really am; and who I always wanted to be!"

As you can see, Ms J did an amazing job of taking care of herself and her photos came out beautiful. She is gorgeous inside and out and she and her family should be proud of the amazing woman she is!

Remember ladies, it's never to late to be a supermodel!!

Denver, Colorado Boudoir Photographer: Free Shoot Contest Winner Ms. N

As you may remember, last month I ran a contest for a free shoot giveaway. All you had to do was tell me why you deserved a free photo shoot to be entered to win. I got some amazing entries and loved reading all of the stories, but in the end I chose Ms. N as my winner.

Ms. N and I went to high school together back in San Jose, CA. We didn't know each other too well back then, but in the years since we've kept in touch. After reading her AMAZING story which brought me to tears, I had to choose her as the winner. Ms. N is an amazing friend, mother, career-woman and just an all-around loving person. Another on of our girlfriends from high school came to help and we all had SUCH a fun, girly time shooting!

Since I was in CA for this shoot, I didn't want to haul my studio lights on the plane. So this entire shoot was done in natural light right in Ms. N's bedroom and I really love how soft the look of the images came out.

Ms. N has graciously allowed me to share her story with you and some of her gorgeous images. Thanks again Ms. N, you deserve it!

Why I Deserve a Free Boudoir Photo Shoot! by Ms. N
So, 500 words or less to say why I deserve a free photo shoot that would not only be sooo fun, but would make me feel great about myself? Where do I start?!

In July 2008 my life changed. Perhaps the most challenging, amazing change of my life occurred- I found out I was going to be a mom! The next 7 months were a bumpy road, and sad to say they did not get easier. My daughter was born 2 months early, and although I had amazing friends and family by my side, I survived that 1st year of my daughter's life as a single mom...it was hard!  It is the hardest job I have ever had. Not only that, but that year with my daughter as my motivation, I also went back to finish school 3 months after she was born. I finished my last class, scored an awesome paid internship, and still graduated on schedule with my class at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco in October of 2009.

By January 2010, I was engaged to my daughter's father, living in San Francisco, and I thought things were really perking up for me. Several months after moving, I received an amazing job offer for a startup cupcake shop, the job of my dreams! I engrossed myself in this job and taking care of my fiancee and daughter. Days and weeks passed with me taking care of those around me, but never really taking care of myself. Then, my fiancee began treating me poorly, and I realized he had not changed one bit, the main reason he was not present for the first year of my daughter's life. This was just the begining of my realization that my life needed to change, It took complete intervention by my friends and family, and complete heartbreak, to see that being in San Francisco was not where I was meant to be and that my relationship with my fiancee was unhealthy and abusive.

So here I am September 2010. So much has changed, BUT I do know several things will remain embedded in my life.......that I am a strong, beautiful and confident woman, and I will be that woman everyday because I want my daughter to see that daily in her life. Also, that as a young single momma, it's ok to be stressed out, it's ok to ask for help, it's ok to need a little 'me' time, and that I need to take care of myself so that I can always be there 100% to take care of my daughter.

I believe I deserve a photo shoot because its time to do a little something for myself! I love The Boudoir Maven's classy photos, and their mission statement. If I do a photo shoot, it will be an awesome way to give me a confidence boost, and preserve my young sassy attitude so that years from now I can look back at them and smile. And who knows....someday some VERY lucky man may get to look at them too.

I truly do believe that our body is a temple, and I have done my very best to take care of mine and wear it with confidence and grace. And what's just as important is what is on the inside as well. I believe that becoming a mom and enduring all these struggles has made me a beautiful person inside and out and I thank God for that everyday. My life has been blessed for striving to be this kind of woman. Proverbs 31:30

Love you Ms. N!!!

Denver, Colorado Boudoir Photographer: Ms. M's Bombshell Photo Shoot

When I heard Ms. M would be flying in from Vegas, I was so excited! And I was even more thrilled to have Ms. M as my first Bombshell client. The Bombshell package is my largest package, including 4 outfits, 2 makeup looks by the amazing Makeup Madame Lindsay Schneider, and hair. Also included is the Bombshell Video which includes your photos and some live video clips from your session. Check it out below!

Side Note: Because I believe Lindsay's talent is so important to my photos, I have included her services in all of my packages. Frankly, Lindsay is the best makeup artist in Colorado and her artistry is a MUST for your boudoir shoot! As you can see, she did an amazing job of glamming up Ms. M. You can read my interview with Lindsay from earlier this year HERE.

Obviously, Ms. M is a beautiful girl. But the best part about her is she has a totally sweet spirit (which I believe is a big part of why she is so STUNNING). She greeted me with a hug, we laughed throughout her whole shoot and just had a great time. She was open to trying anything I had in mind and brought a lot of props to personalize her shoot. All of this made her more comfortable which resulted in the gorgeous photos you see below. (Just a note: the video you see below is not high-resolution)

Thank you Lindsay and Ms. M for a wonderful day!

Denver, Colorado Boudoir: The Fabulous Ms. S

This is a first for me...Ms. S is the mother of another Ms. S I shot back in April. My first mother-daughter team! Ms. S is the perfect example of two things; 1. You don't have to be in your 20's and 30's to get boudoir photos taken and 2. You don't have to wear lingerie to take super sexy photos!

In fact, Ms. S's husband of 22 years had this to say after seeing just her sneak peek photo, ""I have only one thing to say: WOW! That is an amazing picture! You look more than sexy. Holy crap!" Does it get any better than that? Honestly, as much as I LOVE making women feel beautiful and hearing how much fun they had, I love a good quote from a hubby even more ;)

So here are a few of my favorites from Ms. S's session. Thank you Ms. S, you are a lovely woman, wonderful wife and great mother!

A Few of my Favorite Things...

As I am gearing up for a BIG week ahead (Bombshell Shoot, headshots and trip to CA next week) I thought I'd stick with a more low-key post today. A lot of stay-at-home mom's tell me they'd like to get into photography, but don't know where to start. So I point them to where I started, BLOGS. Reading the blogs of professional photographer's has helped me immensely. I also check out some other sites regularly for inspiration. So here they are.

1. Ashley Maxwell Photography- Hands down my biggest influence and in my opinion THE best photographer. I aspire to be half as good as she is someday. I went to high school with Ashley and the best part about her is, not only is she an amazing photographer, she is a kind, giving person with killer style and the cutest family on the planet.

2. The Boudoir Divas- I think my reasons here are pretty obvious =) I read their regular blog and client blog daily.

3. The Boudoir Vixen- Another wonderful boudoir photographer in Louisiana. She is also very helpful when I have questions.

4. Forever 21- I've always loved this store, but now I REALLY have an excuse to shop there as they have the best accessory collection for my shoots. I pretty much go on here every day to see what's new.

5. David Ziser Photography- Just had the opportunity to hear him speak and he has got it together. A wildly successful and genuinely nice man.

6. Victoria's Secret- This site is like a free boudoir posing guide. Such great ideas.

7. Studio Moradi Photography- Another girl I went to HS with....really this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as talented photographer's from my high school. Delbarr has a totally different style than Ashley, but I love them equally!

8. Jasmine Star Photography- I don't get on here as often as I once did, but when I was first starting out, this site was invaluable to me. I read every blog post in 2 days and felt like I had gone to a year of photography school.

All of these sites have upped my photography knowledge in one way or another so I encourage you to check them out! What are some of your favorite sites?

Every blog post needs a photo, so here's one of my favorites ;)

Why Should You Do a Boudoir Photo Shoot?

I just saw this article on The Boudoir Photography Network and had to share. Everyone deserves a boudoir shoot! Don't forget my October Boudoir Special. This is the last special of the year and perfect timing for Christmas gifts for your man. Spots are limited and you must book by September 21.
Why Should You Do a Boudoir Photo Shoot?
By Jennifer DeVore, Certified Professional Photographer
Our society is filled with images of beautiful women. They are on TV and film, on billboards, in magazines and on the Internet. Even walking through the mall, you’ll notice sexy photos of models in store windows. They are just about everywhere. The images in the media can be intimidating for some women. The girls on the big screen are gorgeous bombshells that have been primped and preened to perfection by a team of stylists, make-up artists and personal trainers. Sometimes, these perfected images can lead to body image and self-esteem issues as regular girls and women strive to live up to this idea of beauty and perfection. The thing is that every woman has the potential to look just as beautiful and glamorous as the women in media. The opportunity exits through boudoir photography. Boudoir photos can be a fun-filled, pampering experience for any woman, but they also make a great gift for the man in your life.
What is Boudoir Photography?
Boudoir is a French word that translates into a woman’s private sitting room, dressing room or bedroom. So, boudoir photography is a private session that reveals a woman’s sensual beauty. With the right photographer, the sessions can be fun and girly, sweet and sexy and depict a little bit about your personality and relationship.
Boudoir Has Changed
In the ‘80’s and ‘90’s boudoir photographers gained a reputation for being cheesy and “over the top”. Well, all that has changed! Today, with the right photographer, boudoir photography can be contemporary, classy and fresh. The style now is for images that look like they came from the cover of Vogue or W magazine instead of a men’s magazine. Women are looking for a photographer that can emulate these stylish images and make them look their best. Today’s contemporary photographers are using flattering poses, glamorous and sometimes dramatic lighting as well as hair and make-up artists to offer these images to their clients.
Who Should Do It?
Brides are loving boudoir! Brides are looking for a creative and unique gift to give her fiancĂ© on their wedding eve. Imagine the groom’s surprise as he opens a box featuring a classy, stylish album of photographs of a sexy woman as his pre-wedding gift…and that woman is his bride-to-be!
Often though, boudoir clients are single or already married women looking for a confidence boost. For a photographer, there is nothing better than helping a woman rediscover her inner and outer beauty through portraits.
Military wives are also embracing boudoir photography as a way to stay romantically connected to their man serving overseas. Some boudoir photographers may offer military discounts or special packages for wives of deployed servicemen. There can’t be a better way to keep your soldier motivated than with romantic and classy photos of his beautiful wife!
How Is It Presented?
There are many different ways to package and present boudoir images. Canvas wall portraits for the bedroom or a discreet album are just a few. There are even many different album styles including matted art books and magazine style layout flushmount albums. Some photographers will also offer slideshows as an add-on item.
Body Image
It’s probably safe to say that all women have a part of their body that they wish they could change as well as a few that they love. It is the job of the photographer to highlight each woman’s best features while minimizing her least favorite. With flattering poses and lighting, every woman can look her best and overcome any body image issues while seeing herself in a new way. Every woman deserves to see herself and have her fiancĂ©, husband or loved one see her at her best too.
Whether you are a size 2 or 20 does not matter. Every woman is beautiful and can capture that beauty and give it as a gift to her man or even herself.
Modesty
Each woman and even each photographer has a different comfort level with nudity. Some photographers create fine-art nudes as boudoir; some photographers keep the sessions more modest with less or no nudity. Boudoir photography is an art form and there will be a wide range of styles. Be sure to choose a photographer whose work reflects your style and personality and who you are comfortable with.
Privacy
By federal law, photographers own the rights to any images that they create. The Lovely Ms. D

Ms. D is one of the funniest women I've ever met. Spend 5 minutes with her and you will be cracking up. Apart from that, she is an amazing mother and businesswoman. I was thrilled to photograph her when I was in California, and even more thrilled when she said I could tell you her age.

She is 47 years old and looks amazing, as you can see! We wanted to share that because it's important to know that women of ALL ages can have fun doing a boudoir shoot. I've shot several women in their 40's and 50's already and I think it is even more special for them than it is for the girls in their 20's and 30's.

Thank you Ms. D, you look amazing!!

Bombshell Video Preview

I have some really exciting products coming out and this video service is one of them. As a part of my VIB (Very Important Bombshell) package, VIB's will get a 2 minute film with photos and actual video from their shoot worked in. The company I am using is top notch and these videos are going to be beautiful!

Here is a little snippet of what one of these videos would include...featuring 15 of my lovely ladies =)

A Group Shoot

This is one of my favorite shoots thus far. I was contacted by Ms. D who was referred to me by a previous client. Ms. D, her sister-in-law, her mother, and her sister all came in for shoots during my Grand Opening Week.  And boy, did we have FUN! These ladies are very close and had such a good time getting primped and hanging out together during the shoot. They patiently waited to see their photos until I was back from my vacation.

Then, when they came back for their Unveiling Session last night, we had even more fun! Today is Ms. E's birthday and she is one of the hottest mamas (and grandmamas) I know! I cannot get over the fact that she has grown children and grandchildren, she looks amazing. We had a little celebration for her and, as we do at all Unveiling Sessions, the ladies got to see their photos in a slideshow set to their favorite songs.

Ladies, you were TRULY a pleasure to work with. Ms. D, thank you for getting your family to come with you, driving so far and being an awesome photo consultant. You are beautiful. Ms. K, you have a quiet, gentle spirit and a gorgeous face. Ms. J, you are fun and crazy and stunning and I loved working with you! And Ms. E, the fact that your family lives so close and does so much together is a true testament to how much you are loved. You're a knockout! Thank you ladies, you are all WONDERFUL! Come back anytime ;)
